Violin strings do break, but this should only happen very occasionally. If your strings are breaking regularly, check to see whether they’re rubbing against anything on the violin, for example against another peg, or the side of the pegbox. Ideally strings should be replaced every few months, as they gradually lose their tonal quality, but there’s no need to change them if you’re happy with the sound.

Here’s how to change a violin string:
