Playing at different dynamics

This video explains how to play dynamics by varying the weight of the bow on the string, the speed of the bow-stroke, and by choosing the most suitable part of the bow to play in, as described on page 55 of Violinworks Book 1. You can order a copy of Violinworks here.

Other ways of controlling the dynamic are:

  • Changing the contact point of the bow on the string: the sound is quieter when the bow in nearer the fingerboard and louder when nearer the bridge.
  • Changing the amount of hair that’s in contact with the string by adjusting the tilt of the bow: louder sound with a flat bow hair; quieter sound with the bow stick tilted towards the fingerboard.
